History of lean (page3/7) – What is lean manufacturing?
The objective of Lean is to produce depending on the customer’s demand.
This demand is firstly expressed by a quantity. But the fact that a produce must fulfil the expected essential functions cannot be put aside.
Of course, since competition exists, it is then important to suggest an interesting price while ensuring a margin to the business. Low-cost production is therefore necessary, but this point finally appears as the outcome of the first two criteria (producing the good quantity with only the operations that guarantee the expected functions).
It is partly because of this vision of the things that the LEAN MANUFACTURING spirit initiated by the Japanese constructor differs from the models chosen by other constructors. Giving priority to just-enough production should thus naturally lead to avoid useless spendings that the customer will not have to pay for. Consequently and according to Toyota, the right choice would be diversified production in small quantities. Is this the only key to success? (see next articles)
