History of lean (page2/7)–The birth of lean manufacturing
A few thousands of kilometers away from the USA, on the other side of the Pacific Ocean, Japan was trying to recover from its wounds.
After the war disasters (1945), everything had to be rebuilt. The USA helped Japan’s reconstruction. On the industrial side, the biggest American businesses opened their doors to show up their most competitive production models (already benchmarking: copying is winning). While at the same time the law of supply and demand had definitely changed, mass production models had become obsolete. The market trend, but also the lack of means, urged the Japanese constructors to choose a flexible production system. This was supposed to allow them to limit the investment cost in production means and the storage areas. For the Japanese, the only solution was to produce just enough, just what they were sure to sell. Did the LEAN spirit just appeared then? (see next articles)
